English Aim Higher 2025-2026
NEW FOR THIS ACADEMIC YEAR FOR YEAR 7 to YEAR 13!
We are excited to share with you the launch of the English Department’s Aim Higher booklet, a new initiative designed to inspire and support our students beyond the classroom. This will be pinned at the top of your child’s Google Classroom and on the website.
What is an Aim Higher Activity?
Aim Higher Activities are enrichment opportunities that encourage students to engage with English in ways that go beyond the curriculum. These can include reading books or magazines, watching relevant films or documentaries, or visiting places or events connected to their English studies.
Why are these activities important?
Taking part in Aim Higher Activities helps students deepen their knowledge, broaden their perspectives, and develop a genuine interest in the subject. For those considering university or competitive apprenticeships in the future, these experiences are invaluable. Top universities and employers increasingly look for individuals who demonstrate curiosity, independent learning, and critical thinking - all of which these activities promote.
Broadening horizons and building a strong learning culture
Engaging in Aim Higher Activities allows students to explore ideas, cultures, and perspectives that they may not encounter in everyday lessons. This not only enriches their understanding of the world but also helps to build empathy, creativity, and independent thought. When students challenge themselves in this way, it encourages a culture of ambition and lifelong learning - something we are proud to promote at Towers School.
What’s included?
The booklet includes a carefully curated list of suggestions tailored to each key stage, from Year 7 through to Sixth Form. With links to recommended books, podcasts, documentaries, films, and activities, the booklet offers something for everyone. There is no expectation to purchase any listed resources - many are free, available in our school library, or accessible through Ashford’s public library service.
We hope you’ll explore the booklet with your child and encourage them to take part in activities that interest them. Not only will this help them ‘Aim Higher’ academically, but it will also support their personal growth and aspirations for the future.
